The Oscar nominations for the 90th Annual Academy Awards were announced just over a week ago. This is one of my favorite times of year. The time of year when I eagerly scroll through the nominations, print a paper copy, and excitedly check off the boxes of the films as I watch them.
There were also lots of trains and slits, sometimes both. My Best Dressed goes to Zoe Saldana. Saldana was beautiful in a blush pink, form-fitting, custom Atelier Versace with Neil Lane jewels and post baby curves she should keep. Over 30 looks are picture below and in alphabetical by first name order to be democratic. I also loved Laura Dern in an embellished black and silver Alberta Ferretti gown and a Bulgari turquoise ring, Anna Kendrick in a custom Thakooon coral silk georgette and chiffon gown, Keira Knightley in a floral Valentino Couture gown and Jennifer Aniston in a strapless, beaded, nude Versace gown. Jennifer Lopez's Elie Saab Haute Couture gown was beautiful but her poorly executed eye makeup distracted from the dress that featured intricate beading all over the bodice and a layered tulle skirt.

The colorful tuxes that were popular at last year's Oscars proved to be more than a trend this year. This year's new trend in men's fashion was the man brooch. On his way into the Vanity Fair party, Jared Leto revealed that Oscar night was his last with long hair.
Ellen DeGeneres did such an amazing job last year, she was effortless and the very definition of a tough act to follow. NPH did not meet or surpass Ellen's efforts this year as host. He did a solid job, it certainly was not like when James Franco and Anne Hathaway hosted. As expected, with his Broadway background and opening muscial number, his hosting style was most similar to Hugh Jackman in 2009. I hope Jimmy Fallon will finally host next year -- mark your calendars for Sunday, February 28th, 2016.

Eddie Redmayne was delightful in the joy he expressed at his win for Best Actor. Julianne Moore gave a lovely acceptance speech as well and spoke briefly but notably about Alzheimer's. JK Simmons gave the same speech he has been giving (those above average children of his must be sick of being described that way) though his closing sentiment to call, not text or email your living parents was a thoughtful surprise. Patricia Arquette wore her glasses and read from a list (nominees are encouraged at the Oscar nominee luncheon to be thoughtful and prepare for an acceptance speech and strongly recommended to not have something written down) but her call for equal pay for women at the end of her speech was very unexpected. Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lopez loved it. There are a billion people watching worldwide so if you have something to say, it is the moment to have a large, captive audience.

The best musical performances were the stirring "Glory" from Selma by Common and John Legend and the exuberant "Everything is Awesome" from The Lego Movie by the Lonely Island and Tegan and Sara. If I can not have a real Oscar, I'd love one of those Lego Oscars. Lady Gaga toned down her wardrobe to sing a Sound of Music medley for the 50th Anniversary of the film that touched Julie Andrews. Adam Levine and Tim McGraw gave solid performances of the songs nominated from Begin Again, "Lost Stars" (though I prefer the Keira Knightly version) and "I'm Not Gonna Miss You" from the documentary Glen Campbell...I'll Be Me.

The stage sets were fantastic, one a grand spectacle peppered with shining Oscar statues and another with a glamorous vintage movie theater entrance. The set for the performance of Glory generated strong emotions, incorporating the bridge from Selma and many extras appearing to cross the bridge.

It was an Oscar night when those that the orchestra tried to play off, kept talking and finished their acceptance speeches. Usually the music does not relent and it seemed like a victory when the music stopped and the winners were able to finish their speeches. I wait for the Oscars all year, I enjoy every minute of it and I do not mind if the show runs long -- all the more to enjoy.

It seemed as though John Travolta was redeeming himself for his horrible mispronunciation of Idina Menzel's name when he announced her performance of "Let It Go" during last year's show. Menzel showed grace and what a good sport she was by presenting with Travolta. Then he had to go and touch her face, way too much. Hopefully there will be no opportunity for reliving that moment next year.

Joan Rivers was not included in the in memoriam, a startling omission. This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the red carpet at the Oscars and Joan Rivers invented the institution of the red carpet.

I accurately predicted 19/24 categories this year. Last year was my personal best with 22/24 and I knew then it would be difficult to replicate for possibly several years. In previous years the best that I had been able to predict was always maxed out at 18/24. Birdman took home the Best Picture statue and tied with The Grand Budapest Hotel with the most wins, four each. Whiplash won three Oscars.
Boyhood and Birdman are in a close race for Best Picture this year but it looks like Boyhood, a film that took twelve years to film, will take home the statue. Michael Keaton for his performance in Birdman and Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking in the Theory of Everything is the tightest race of the year. Odds are in Redmayne's favor but Keaton could sneak past him. It will come down to whether the Academy will honor a new star or a Hollywood veteran. I can see it going either way. I would not be surprised if voters back Keaton but Redmayne has the momentum to win.

It would seem that this year the honor is being shared with multiple films and that there will be no winner take all sweep for any one feature, I predict that The Grand Budapest Hotel will win the most statues with four, then Boyhood with three and Birdman, The Theory of Everything and Whiplash with two each.
This year's BAFTAs mark the last major event before Oscar weekend. The Independent Spirit Awards as they historically do, take place the night before the Oscars but are two weeks away. Stephen Fry hosted for the tenth time and seamlessly has his very British way of hosting down pat, no surprises. His one blunder was calling Patricia Arquette by her sister Rosanna's name in his opening monologue. The first award, Outstanding British Film, was presented by David Beckham and The Theory of Everything won. Special Visual Effects for Interstellar, the second award of the evening, was presented by the star of The Theory of Everything, Felicity Jones, and Stephen Hawking himself. Beautiful in purple, Reese Witherspoon presented Best Supporting Actor to JK Simmons for Whiplash. Simmons, Arquette and Moore seem locked to win the Oscars in their categories. Moore has also been flawless thus far on the red carpet. Redmayne has the edge over Michael Keaton for the Oscar for Best Actor, though it is still quite close. Best Film went to Boyhood. Birdman and Boyhood remain in an almost too close to call race for the Best Picture Oscar statue. The full list of BAFTA winners follows.
The luncheon marks a tradition that honors all nominees and shines a light on all those honored for their achievements in film by the Academy. The event has some of the best photo-ops, including a class picture of all the nominees in attendance and sometimes even individual category group shots. The photos are not always easy to track down, making the photos all the more exciting.
The SAG Awards have their own tradition of opening on a variety of actors explaining how they got their SAG cards or what inspired them to act, and each ending with the phrase '...and I'm an actor." The awards ceremony is also presented without a host and the winners are selected by their peers. This years' SAG award winners represented more of the diversity that the Academy has been accused of lacking in their nominees, albeit in television. There was even a montage about equal rights and unions.

The fashions at the SAG Awards are formal yet often with more daring choices than at the Oscars. Julianne Moore wore an emerald Riccardo Tisci when she won for Still Alice. Nominated for Wild, Reese Witherspoon paired her white matte sequin Giorgio Armani gown with Harry Winston jewels. Repossi ear cuff and Louboutin heels complimented Birdman co-star Emma Stone in a black tuxedo inspired Dior Haute Couture gown. Wearing a striped, digital-print Elie Saab gown with Fred Leighton jewels, Lupita Nyong'O presented Outstanding Male Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries with Jared Leto. Those two are so hot together, quit teasing us and hook up already. Jennifer Aniston wore a vintage, plunging Galliano gown with paisley print and her favorite accessory this season, a gold body necklace. Julie Roberts was a part of the jumpsuit trend in Givenchy with Tiffany jewelry. Amy Poehler was in a Jenny Packham blue halter gown, accessorized with Effy Jewelry diamonds. In a green Marc Jacobs halter, Claire Danes accessorized with Norman Silverman diamonds. Keira Knightley wore a mulberry eyelet Erdem gown and was a part of the ear cuff trend with on by Repossi. Stone also wore an ear cuff.

The full list of winners follows the red carpet photos.
Let's see how I did. Click here for the original post.

Unbroken While not for Angelina Jolie's direction, the acting or the Coen Brothers' script, the biopic of Olympic track star and World War II vet Louis Zamperini did receive, 3 NOMINATIONS: Cinematography, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing

Grand Budapest Hotel I thought Wes Anderson's picture would at the very least earn a Best Original Screenplay nod. I was no where close to predicting it leading with 9 NOMINATIONS: Best Picture, Cinematography, Costume Design, Directing, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Production Design, and Original Screenplay

Rosewater The film Jon Stewart directed did not earn any nominations but it did receive critical praise.

Gone Girl The Fincher directed film received 1 NOMINATION: Actress in Leading Role, Rosamund Pike

The Monuments Men Had all the right elements but did not catch fire with Academy members or audiences. It's post Oscar release date probably did not help.

Inherent Vice Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, it received 2 NOMINATION: Costume Design and Adapted Screenplay.

Interstellar Directed by Christopher Nolan. 5 NOMINATIONS: Original Score, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects

Foxcatcher Bennett Miller's Moneyball follow-up received 5 NOMINATIONS: Actor in a Leading Role, Steve Carell, Actor in a Supporting Role, Mark Ruffalo, Directing, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Original Screenplay)

Into the Woods 3 NOMINATIONS: Actress in a Supporting Role Meryl Streep, Costume Design and Production Design

I was correct with all of my Iffy entries, movies with early buzz that did not turn into the big pictures that they might have. Jupiter Ascending's release was moved back to February 6th of 2015. Perhaps it will have technical nominations in 2016.

Noah and Cesar Chavez were met with mixed reviews and audience response.

Birdman, Boyhood, The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything were each anticipated to earn several nominations. Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel received the most nods with nine for both films. The Imitation Game was close behind with eight, Boyhood had six nominations and American Sniper surprised with six as well. Receiving five nominations were Foxcatcher and Interstellar. Another surprise, the film Mr Turner about British painter JMW Turner was nominated four times for Cinematography, Costume Design, Original Score and Production Design.
I usually do not focus on snubs, but I was very disappointed that Jennifer Aniston was not nominated for Best Actress for Cake and that the Lego Movie was not nominated for Best Animated Feature. It helps soften the blow that "Everything is Awesome" from the Lego Movie was nominated for Best Original Song.

The same night on A and E, Michael Strahan hosted the Critics' Choice Movie Awards which aired on television for the first time.
Best Sportsmanship Award goes to Jennifer Aniston, snubbed by the Academy the same morning, she seemed giddy to see Emily Blunt win Best Actress in an Action Film and snuck a fan like photo with Blunt when she returned to the audience. Aniston grabbed a similar photo with her fellow nominee Julianne Moore and she seemed like she was having a ball. Emily Blunt and husband John Krasinski are the best couple. And not the cheesy kind but the fun, cool, real kind (not like Donnie and Jenny or Will and Jada). Krasinski happened to be backstage when Blunt won and he ran on stage to hug her as she started her acceptance speech.
While Ron Howard gave a wonderful acceptance speech for his lifetime achievement award and had beautiful sentiments for his wife, Kevin Costner went on too long and referred to Sean Connery and Gene Hackman as if they had passed away.

The attempts at comedy by the host and as written for the presenters was uneven. Some landed and some missed the mark somewhat pitifully. The showed opened with a Magic Mike like dance because apparently Michael Strahan is in the sequel. The bit Leslie Mann did to present Blunt's win by trying to get Josh Gad to serenade her with her favorite Olaf quote was great. An hour later when her husband Judd Apatow presented, he was the only one with risky humor. He managed to get in a quick Cosby/Wilt Chamberlain joke and say his wife wanted to screw a snowman.
When Jessica Chastain accepted the first ever MVP Award (she was in four different critically acclaimed films in 2014; they could have created the award for her in 2011 when she was in seven movies), she was the first to mention that it was Martin Luther King Jr's birthday. She quoted Dr King and asked that everyone speak out against all forms of discrimination. Common gave a wonderful, heartfelt speech for the best song win for "Glory" that was even better than the solid one he gave at the Golden Globes four days earlier.

The Oscars, the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards, they all have their own tone and signature feel. It was the Critics' Choice Awards first year out. They had some growing pains and struggled to find their wavelength. The good, A-list moments made it a far cry better than the People's Choice Awards (those have not even been watchable for years) and seemed better than the also rookie year the Hollywood Film Awards had, though both had very similar vibes.

Birdman led with five wins, Boyhood four and The Grand Budapest Hotel won three. It just so happens that those three films also received the most Oscar nominations the day of the Critics' Choice Movie Awards.

Julianne Moore pulled off the "name-all-your-fellow-nominees" hat trick genuinely and with a compliment in a word or two that described the characters that the actresses she shared her category with portrayed. She did it without notes, or awkward pauses. Many attempt this in their acceptances speeches but few really do it sincerely.
The most likely Oscar forecast to come from the awards ceremony may be Eddie Redmayne's win for Best Actor in a Drama for the Theory of Everything and Michael Keaton for Birdman in a Comedy or Musical. Their nominations for Best Actor Academy Awards seem locked, and a close race between the two for the Oscar statue likely. The many wins for Boyhood also seem promising for the film's Oscar hopes. The Academy Award nominations are announced at 5:30am Pacific time on Thursday, January 15th.

The Cecil B DeMille award was presented to George Clooney by Julianna Margulies and Don Cheadle. Regrettably Clooney did comment and thank his new bride.

The full list of winners follows the red carpet looks.
Birdman, Boyhood, The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game have several nominations that continue to add to their Oscar buzz. The film with the most BAFTA nominations is The Grand Budapest Hotel, with 11 (last year Gravity had 11 BAFTA nominations). The BAFTAs have more accurately predicted the best picture winner at the Oscars more often than the Golden Globes (which air Sunday, January 11th on NBC).
2014 was Chris Pratt's year. The awesome body, The Lego Movie, the top grossing Guardians of the Galaxy. Then on tv he hosted the SNL season opener and before the year end holidays, Parks and Rec wrapped its final season. Next up for Pratt, Jurassic World hits theaters June 2015.

Reese Witherspoon

Witherspoon produced Gone Girl, produced and starred in Cheryl Strayed's memoir Wild for which she has already received Golden Globe, SAG and Critics' Choice nominations. She is likely to obtain an Oscar nomination. While a much more under the radar film, her performance in The Good Lie was excellent. She also appeared in the awards fodder flick Inherent Vice, which reunited Witherspoon with her Walk the Line costar Joaquin Phoenix. Next year in May, Witherspoon costars with Sofia Vergara in the buddy pic, Don't Mess With Texas.

Mark Ruffalo
Three superb roles across big and small screens. Ruffalo was heartbreakingly amazing in HBO's the Normal Heart. His performance earned him Emmy, Golden Globe, Critics' Choice TV and SAG nods. Begin Again with Keira Knightley was an indie delight. For his most recent work in Foxcatcher, Ruffalo received SAG, Critics' Choice Movie and Golden Globe nominations. An Oscar nom for Foxcatcher is likely. 2015 will have Ruffalo in the Avengers sequel in May and another indie in January.
Cameron Diaz
Diaz had the surprise spring hit The Other Woman and authored a wildly successful book about the female body. She was sitting pretty to weather the mediocre reception of Sex Tape in the summer. She hosted SNL for the fourth time just before the release of holiday pleaser, the Annie revamp. Diaz was on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon four times in 2014 and she even has her own door onto his set. Diaz produced the tv adaptation of Bad Teacher and it is rumored that Bad Teacher 2 will film in 2015.
While a lesser known awards show with many categories, the Critics' Choice Awards definitely reflect on the attitudes of Hollywood and helps to predict the Oscar nominations. Awards are given by the Broadcast Film Critics Association. Birdman continues to dominate awards season and leads with thirteen nods. The Grand Budapest Hotel received eleven nominations and Boyhood eight. This is the 20th year for the awards and the first year that the awards show will air on television. This awards season marks the first year for several awards being televised; earlier in mid November the Hollywood Film Awards aired on CBS and Thursday, December 18th, the first ever People Magazine Awards air on NBC.
Love the nods for Obvious Child and Jenny Slate, this is the platform for the film to be given the recognition that it deserves. Birdman and Michael Keaton, Boyhood, Foxcatcher and Julianne Moore in Still Alice have shown up on all the nomination lists so far and that bodes well for their Oscar chances.
His comedic skills are put to great use as well and he was perfectly cast as the lead. The ragtag team he works with include Zoe Saldana, trading her Avatar blue for green as assassin Gamora (though she does have a blue sister), Rocket Racoon voiced by Bradley Cooper and his muscle, Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel. Josh Brolin voices an uncredited role as Gamora's father Thanos, Benicio Del Toro portrays the Collector and Glenn Close is Nova Prime.

The movie balances sci fi, superhero, and comedy genres with special effects and excellent dialogue. The pop culture references begin immediately with the Awesome Mix Vol 1 mixtape (and subsequently a fantastic soundtrack) in the opening scene and proceed to include the Millenium Falcon, Jackson Pollock, Footloose, and John Stamos. While very mainstream, the movie is also offbeat at times and sometimes delightfully odd. The extensive backstories and amount of villains to keep track of would seem to indicate an effort to remain true to the comic book.
Like any smart Marvel project, sequels and a growing franchise seem definite. Special effect nominations are likely, the movie is short listed for a Best Visual effects nod, and due to the success of the blockbuster references and montage inclusion at the Oscars probable. Amy Poehler could get in some jokes about her Parks and Rec costar Chris Pratt at the Globes as well.
On the television side, award magnet Modern Family was shut out. Mark Ruffalo again received double nominations for film and tv. Julianne Moore was nominated in both drama and comedy categories and Bill Murray was acknowledged in both movie and television categories.
Birdman led the movie nominations with four and Modern Family television, also with four. Boyhood, The Imitation Game, and The Theory of Everything each received three film nominations. HBO led the networks with fourteen nominees. Jennifer Aniston received best female actor nomination for her much buzzed about performance in the movie Cake. Mark Ruffalo was nominated for both his work in television and film. The SAG film nominations provide a solid gage of the potential Oscar nominees, sometimes even more than the Golden Globes.
The confusion and debate about what qualifies a television program as a series or a miniseries is exemplified by the Outstanding Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries and Male Actor in a Drama Series categories with the SAG Awards. Both Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey received actor nominations in the drama series category for True Detective but Billy Bob Thornton was nominated for Fargo in the tv movie or miniseries category. Fargo had ten episodes and True Detective had eight. The Golden Globes have chosen to address this issue by renaming the miniseries category, Limited Series, which will include True Detective. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has stated that the limited series category will be based on story and content, not on length or number of episodes. Earlier this year the Primetime Emmys had the same designations for True Detective and Fargo as SAG. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has a pretty specific definition for miniseries, "A miniseries is based on a single theme or storyline, which is resolved within the piece. In a single awards year, all of the parts must be presented under the same title and have continuity of production supervision. A miniseries consists of two or more episodes with a total running time of at least four broadcast hours (at least 150 program minutes)." Sounds simple enough but there is an additional rule that a miniseries can not include a 'created by' credit, which explains why True Detective lands in the full series category at the Emmys.
As television evolves -- see also streaming content and its crop of nominees, the categories of awards shows will continue to change with the times.

There is also a television Stunt Team category that 24: Live Another Day, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Homeland, Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead were nominated for. Should be The Walking Dead all the way. The stunt categories will be announced as part of the live red carpet coverage.

The SAG awards will air live on tbs and TNT on Saturday January 25th at 8pm Eastern and 5pm Pacific. The Golden Globe nominations will be announced tomorrow morning by Kate Beckinsale, Peter Krause, Paula Patton and Jeremy Piven at 8:20 and 8:35am Eastern time from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Hollywood.
A little known precursor to awards season, nominees were not announced, only winners presented. All the winners knew ahead of time. This was the 18th annual ceremony for the Hollywood Film Awards and it has previously been a private Hollywood event.
Awards season's opening ceremony, self proclaimed Official Launch of the Award Season -- trademark -- it is the first stomp on the campaign trail to the Oscars. The number of A List actors in attendance and presenting awards seemed confusing for an event with little prestige. Almost as confusing was when the "winners" would say what an honor it was to receive the award. There does seem to be plenty of easily googled photographic evidence of previous awards seasons' top winners appearing at the Hollywood Film Awards first.

Angelina Jolie was a combination of sincere and stern as she described casting Jack O'Donnell in the film Unbroken, which she directed. Johnny Depp was completely wasted when he presented the best documentary winner to Shep Gordon.

A bright spot was Geena Davis' introduction to Michael Keaton's career achievement award and the accompanying montage. The minimum of three shots of Ben Affleck seeming to worry if he'd be a good enough Batman the whole time was also quite amusing. Keaton's performance in Birdman looks to have strong traction for an Academy nod.
All the films and roles honored have good early buzz for awards season. The event seemed like the epitome of Hollywood's self congratulating and endless award shows that many criticize. Great movie montages though. It looks to be as strong of a season as any.

A list of the winners follows the red carpet looks. Best Dressed goes to Reese Witherspoon in J Mendel.
That's fourteen more shows than Conan hosted during his brief tenure as host of the Tonight Show. Conan lives on well on tbs.

This makes me think of some of the best lip synced movie scenes and the best time transitional scene ever. That of course is Hugh Grant in Notting Hill as Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" plays along his walk through a year's worth of seasons.
The dark comedy It's Kind of a Funny Story features a fantasy lip sync to Queen and David Bowie's "Under Pressure" with Zach Galifianakis, Keir Gilchrist, and Emma Roberts.
The movie met all my expectations and was hilarious. The film is now among my favorite dysfunctional family flicks. It's right up there with Home for the Holidays, the Family Stone and the Royal Tenenbaums. The tagline is great, Welcome Home. Get Uncomfortable. I was also lucky enough to see the movie at a screening before its wide release Friday September 19th. The excellent cast is so large that not all of them are featured on the movie poster.

Jane Fonda shines as the matriarch of hilarious siblings, Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Corey Stoll, and Adam Driver. Bateman and Fey need no introduction. Stoll was Hemingway in Midnight in Paris and one of the angry passengers in Non-Stop. Driver is best know for Girls and is in the new Star Wars. Rounding out the supporting cast are Rose Byrne, Timothy Olyphant, Connie Britton and Kathryn Hahn.

The writing is fantastic. It is the kind of movie that you know you will have to rewatch so that you can catch the dialogue that you were laughing over. The screenplay was written by Jonathan Tropper, the author of the novel the film is based on. I can not wait to read the book. There is also a great soundtrack.

The movie balances snark and heartwarming in just the right way. If the tone were focused on one more than the other, the result could have been mean spirited or corny. If you love a good dysfunctional family comedy, you will really enjoy This Is Where I Leave You.
