Awards season continued with the 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Shrine Auditorium. The SAG Awards have their own tradition of opening on a variety of actors explaining how they got their SAG cards or what inspired them to act, and each ending with the phrase '...and I'm an actor." The awards ceremony is also presented without a host and the winners are selected by their peers. This years' SAG award winners represented more of the diversity that the Academy has been accused of lacking in their nominees, albeit in television. There was even a montage about equal rights and unions.
The fashions at the SAG Awards are formal yet often with more daring choices than at the Oscars. Julianne Moore wore an emerald Riccardo Tisci when she won for Still Alice. Nominated for Wild, Reese Witherspoon paired her white matte sequin Giorgio Armani gown with Harry Winston jewels. Repossi ear cuff and Louboutin heels complimented Birdman co-star Emma Stone in a black tuxedo inspired Dior Haute Couture gown. Wearing a striped, digital-print Elie Saab gown with Fred Leighton jewels, Lupita Nyong'O presented Outstanding Male Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries with Jared Leto. Those two are so hot together, quit teasing us and hook up already. Jennifer Aniston wore a vintage, plunging Galliano gown with paisley print and her favorite accessory this season, a gold body necklace. Julie Roberts was a part of the jumpsuit trend in Givenchy with Tiffany jewelry. Amy Poehler was in a Jenny Packham blue halter gown, accessorized with Effy Jewelry diamonds. In a green Marc Jacobs halter, Claire Danes accessorized with Norman Silverman diamonds. Keira Knightley wore a mulberry eyelet Erdem gown and was a part of the ear cuff trend with on by Repossi. Stone also wore an ear cuff.

The SAG Awards got the jump on the Golden Globes nominations by one day, announced live by Eva Longoria and Ansel Elgort the morning of Wednesday December 10th. Birdman led the movie nominations with four and Modern Family television, also with four. Boyhood, The Imitation Game, and The Theory of Everything each received three film nominations. HBO led the networks with fourteen nominees. Jennifer Aniston received best female actor nomination for her much buzzed about performance in the movie Cake. Mark Ruffalo was nominated for both his work in television and film. The SAG film nominations provide a solid gage of the potential Oscar nominees, sometimes even more than the Golden Globes.
The confusion and debate about what qualifies a television program as a series or a miniseries is exemplified by the Outstanding Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries and Male Actor in a Drama Series categories with the SAG Awards. Both Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey received actor nominations in the drama series category for True Detective but Billy Bob Thornton was nominated for Fargo in the tv movie or miniseries category. Fargo had ten episodes and True Detective had eight. The Golden Globes have chosen to address this issue by renaming the miniseries category, Limited Series, which will include True Detective. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has stated that the limited series category will be based on story and content, not on length or number of episodes. Earlier this year the Primetime Emmys had the same designations for True Detective and Fargo as SAG. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has a pretty specific definition for miniseries, "A miniseries is based on a single theme or storyline, which is resolved within the piece. In a single awards year, all of the parts must be presented under the same title and have continuity of production supervision. A miniseries consists of two or more episodes with a total running time of at least four broadcast hours (at least 150 program minutes)." Sounds simple enough but there is an additional rule that a miniseries can not include a 'created by' credit, which explains why True Detective lands in the full series category at the Emmys.
As television evolves -- see also streaming content and its crop of nominees, the categories of awards shows will continue to change with the times.
There is also a television Stunt Team category that 24: Live Another Day, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Homeland, Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead were nominated for. Should be The Walking Dead all the way. The stunt categories will be announced as part of the live red carpet coverage.
The SAG awards will air live on tbs and TNT on Saturday January 25th at 8pm Eastern and 5pm Pacific. The Golden Globe nominations will be announced tomorrow morning by Kate Beckinsale, Peter Krause, Paula Patton and Jeremy Piven at 8:20 and 8:35am Eastern time from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Hollywood.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are about actors honoring their peers and celebrating the importance of their unions. The ceremony opens with actors telling a story of how they got their SAG card and each concludes with, I am an actor. Last year the speeches were fairly weak. This year, they were much stronger. First to go, the eternally youthful Rob Lowe and also Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco. Lupita Nyong'o was delightful in her acceptance of the Female Actor in a Supporting Role, the first award of the night. She told the story of telling her father she got the role in 12 Years A Slave. She asked him, "Do you know Brad Pitt?" His reply, "Not personally, but I am glad you got a job." Jared Leto gave a better speech than he gave at the Globes. He is working his way up to that big Oscar acceptance speech. Julia Louis-Dreyfus accepted her actor in character. Ty Burrell won Male Actor in a Comedy Series, as did the cast of Modern Family for Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
Rita Moreno was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by Morgan Freeman. He pointed out that she is one of the eleven performers to "EGOT" (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar Tony) but the only one to have many other honors, including the National Medal of Arts, ALMA and Golden Globe Awards. She was hilarious in her speech and even dropped an f-bomb as she took the stage.
The final season of Breaking Bad was once again honored with Actors to Bryan Cranston for Male Actor in a Drama Series and the cast for Ensemble in a Drama Series. Male Actor in a Leading Role went to Matthew McConaughey. He needs to work on his speech for it to be a good one come the Oscars. American Hustle won for Cast in a Motion Picture. Julia Roberts looked fantastic in a bright pink Valentino jumpsuit. Jennifer Garner wore a classic look in a Max Mara column gown with train and matching David Webb earrings. Newcomer and Best Supporting Actress winner Lupita Nyong'o stunned in a bright turquoise Gucci gown with Fred Leighton jewelry. Nyong'o is quickly making a name for herself for her award winning acting and her fashion on the red carpet. The asymmetrical blue Antonio Berardi Amy Adams wore was great. Sandra Bullock's green Lanvin was beautiful. The silver Donna Karan Atelier Sofia Vergara wore was gorgeous. Anna Gunn had the best accessory of the night, her custom Breaking Bad logo Edie Parker box clutch, paired with a sequin-embellished midnight-blue Monique Lhuliler gown.

It looks as though the movies leading the way to the Oscars are 12 Years A Slave, Gravity, The Butler, Dallas Buyers Club, Captain Phillips, American Hustle and August: Osage County. Award show mainstays and A-listers Tom Hanks, Matthew McConaughey, Meryl Strep, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lawrence, Oprah Winfrey and Sandra Bullock joined newcomers Daniel Brühl, Lupita Nyong'o, Barkhad Abdi and Chiwetel Ejiofor in the acting categories.
An element of both the SAG and Globes, while not Oscar related, is the inclusion of the television categories. I must say that I love that Taylor Schilling was nominated for a Globe for Orange Is The New Black. Though her nomination in the drama category as opposed to comedy is inaccurate. The laid back nature of both shows makes for a more convivial experience. The actors are seated together by project and drink at the Golden Globes. A similar atmosphere is cultivated at the SAG Awards. Because television and movies are honored, the celeb watching and red carpet possibilities are a bit more limitless.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are once again hosting the 71st Annual Golden Globes Sunday, January 12th at 8pm Eastern and 5pm Pacific on NBC. The pair signed on for two more years after hosting fabulously last year. They're ours for 2014 and 2015. Sosie Bacon has been named Miss Golden Globe 2014. The tradition is that the child of acting parents is selected and as Miss Golden Globe assists the presenters with the handing out of the awards during the ceremony. The 20th Annual SAG Awards will air live on TNT and TBS on Saturday, January 18th at 8pm Eastern and 5pm Pacific. CECIL B DeMILLE AWARD
Woody Allen. It will be interesting to see if Allen participates in receiving the Cecil B DeMille in the traditional ways. Before giving a speech, another delightful aspect of the tradition is that the recipient is announced by a close colleague or a frequent collaborator, and is often very humorous. My best guess for presenting Allen is Penelope Cruz or Alec Baldwin. Last year for example Robert Downey Jr announced Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson was often cut to in the audience. Allen is famously a non-member of the Academy Awards. The Oscar organization has invited Allen to be a member of the Academy multiple times and has awarded him with four Oscars. Allen declines membership. Given this context, Allen's participation in receiving the Cecil B DeMille will be very telling.
