Before Midnight

Before Midnight is the third film featuring Jesse and Céline as portrayed by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. The two met in Vienna in Before Sunrise and nine years later again in Paris in Before Sunset. All three movies are directed by Richard Linklater. Each of the movies take place in a different city in Europe and were made nine years apart. In Before Midnight, the couple is on vacation in Greece and have eight year old twin girls. All three films feature Hawke and Delpy walking and talking and while the style is the same, each movie is strong and could stand on its own.

The script by Linklater, Hawke and Delpy is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay though it is not favored to win. The second film in the trilogy, Before Sunset, was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Linklater shared writing credit with the co-stars on the sequel. The movie is available on DVD, OnDemand and at Redbox.

Despicable Me 2
The sequel did not hold my attention all that well but it features a range of voice talent and the animation is strong. The movie is nominated for Best Animated Feature and for Best Song, Happy by Pharrell Williams. Much attention has been on the Best Song category over the last weeks because one of the original nominees was revoked. Alone Yet Not Alone from the obscure movie of the same name had its nomination rescinded due to improper campaigning. There are only five previous cases in the history of the Academy of rescinded nominations and all the scenarios are unique. Entertainment Weekly has an excellent article about Alone Yet Not Alone and the others that were removed or prevented from reaching the ballot. Frozen is favored to beat Despicable Me 2 in both categories.
